Not long after Speedtrial event, the water pump on the KA starts to leak at the bottom bleed hole. Instead of just changing the water pump, we decide to take use of the time and labor to change the following:
Koyo Aluminum Race Radiator
Removal of fan clutch
Add FAL Dual Fans
ASP Main Crank Pulley
Change New Factory Thermostat
New Front Main Seal
New Belts (A/C, Main, P/S)
After couple hours of install time, everything went in nice and smoothly. The FAL fans covers the entire Koyo radiator surface, and we liked it even more when it barely clears all the a/c components without a hitch! Very nice fans. At any rate, the initial test drive revealed much improvement in the throttle response. Some gains were felt on the top end, but we feel at this stage all the gains were improving on/off throttle response and how freely the motor revs to redline!
As most people know the factory main pulley is dampened, so by adding a lighter non-dampened pulley might cause some motor trouble, but since couple years ago we have had good experience with UR pulley we decided to change out the factory pulley, this time with ASP pulley which is over twice as cheap as the UR pulley (back then in 1996 UR pulley was the ONLY choice). After the pulley was installed, we felt the pulley actually SMOOTHENED out the motor. Everyone knows most S13 KA engine makes alot of engine vibrations during 70-80mph cruise, the most annyoing fact is it will shake your rear view mirror so much that you can't really see who's behind you. After the pulley was installed now we can actually see who's behind us! The rear view mirror vibration is still there somewhat, but vibration was much reduced after the pulley change. Plus the fact the motor revs so freely to redline leads us to believe the pulley does wonders on the KA even though they are supposedly undampened. Can't wait until the stock clutch wears out so we can put in ACT clutch / Fidanza flywheel combo and see what the KA can do!
